Your Baby Can Read
This system is a natural way of teaching infants and toddlers to recognize the shapes of letters and words. It is based on research at Indiana University. The TV commercial shows very young babies recognizing words like "ear", "elephant", and complicated words like "chimpanzee". The babies clearly knew exactly what the words were just by looking at them. I was so impressed with the commercial I purchased the DVD set.
My children had fun watching the movies and interacted with what they saw on TV. When I bought them I really did not expect them to learn to read but I thought they looked educational. My 2 year old started remembering what would come next and when she saw the word come on the screen like "ear" I would ask her, "what does that say?" and she would tell me. This may be because she knew the movies but either way, she now recognizes words and letters.
This technique can be done without buying this DVD set. You can read to your child as much as possible and make flash cards. The result is the same, children really can remember the words! I think the title of the DVDs is a little misleading because it causes you to say, no way, a 1 year old could never "read", however, when your 1 year old can recognize a word, you are giving them a wonderful head start in their development. If you continue to expose them to books, flash cards, and other reading tools, your child will learn to read way ahead of her peers.
This will take a lot of determination on your part because you are her primary teacher but the videos make this learning process so much fun. You will be dancing and playing with the videos not just sitting and watching. They ask your child to interact and repeat the words and pictures shown because the best way for children to learn is to have fun doing it!
